Two to three inches holds moisture and blocks weeds. Much deeper and you starve roots of air and invite rot at the base of your plants — a problem we see constantly on beds that were topped up year after year without ever being cleaned out.
We pull the old mulch back, re-cut the edge, and lay to the right depth with clearance around every trunk and stem.
Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down and suits planted beds. Rock never needs replacing and works well in drainage areas and low-traffic borders. Plenty of yards are best with both, used in different places.
Most beds want a refresh once a year. We clean out and re-edge rather than piling fresh mulch on top, which is what causes beds to creep upward and swallow the base of your plants.
It reduces them dramatically rather than eliminating them. Proper depth and a clean edge do most of the work, and anything that does push through pulls out easily.
Yes. Cleanout, debris, and old mulch all leave with us. You shouldn't be left with piles in the driveway to deal with afterwards.
